I’ve heard that at some clubs members have decided to stay away because of the subject matter. That’s not a problem for me, as I call my talk “Have I Got Nudes For You” precisely so that people are crystal clear what my images are about, and can stay away if they wish. Talking to photographers at clubs it appears that the general perception of nude images is of models in rather less than elegant poses with unflattering lighting, and they didn’t want to sit through an evening of such images.
I do know from forums, exhibition catalogues, and other outlets where I see images that there are many great photographers of the nude out there, and hopefully between us we can change the perception of this genre of photography in clubs. By this time next year my talk will have been seen by around 1,000 photographers, so Im hopefully doing my bit to improve things.
Here’s a few images of Holly I took on my recent tour of camera clubs. I was really pleased that she attended one of the talks in Scotland, so she was able to see some of our images in their final printed form : (Yes, I was nervous that she was in the audience!)
As well as thanks to Holly, I must thank the people who recommended me to talk at their clubs, and to all the programme secretaries who gave me the opportunity to share my images with their members. Last, but definitely not least, a huge thank you to all those who have attended and given me such great feedback :)
UPDATE: This post isn’t meant to be negative, far from it, my talks have had an excellent reception and I am trying to convey how pleased I am that I have changed some people’s perceptions of my genre of photography.
