I like working on location, but living in a city there are not that many great locations nearby, so I am doing more and more travelling for my shoots, including visiting lots of friends in far away places who make the mistake of inviting me, without realising that I generally take people up on their invitations ;-)
And so earlier this year I visited the talented Francisa Da Silva in Portugal, this was the third time I had visited her, and she has visited me twice as well so far. I always enjoy our adventures together, and this one was no exception. Francisca is pretty amazing at finding and researching locations, and she had certainly exceeded herself this time.
I organise the models, and we generally go with a model we know. As this was quite a long shoot we didn’t want to take risks with a new model, and so we chose the lovely Ivory Flame.
So here’s a very small selection of the great images we produced to give you some idea of the super locations, there are absolutely loads more to come when I get some editing time in the Winter months:
This is a straight shot, the light was a strange mixture of colours on the wall.
When you are shooting at 1250 ISO, 1/15s at f1.4 you know there’s not much light about!
Thanks to Francisca and Holly, and we’ve already got the model booked and some thoughts for really great locations for next year’s trip :)

Absolutely stunning images near on impossible to choose a favourite xx
Thank you Elizabeth, I like the variety of images we produced.
So envious of these Portugal trips of yours Tim — wish I had a friend there! The land must be so rich in locations for this kind of photography and the weather to do it in. Love the 5th shot with Holly in the shaft of light and the last one against the green shutter; both invite such pleasurable contemplation of Holly’s sublime figure. And the 6th one is stunning in it’s strangeness–what a strange creature in the corner! Like a cipher or a glyph of a being adding to the wonderful lines and geometry of the space. But the first one, your banner for this post… wow! Transports me to another world; makes me think of some high mountain sanctuary of the goddess in Minoan times! Hail goddess!
Thank you Randall, you have friends everywhere, you just meed to look!
We did produce such a wide variety of images, and that banner one was high up in the mountains, and I think the wind turbines make Holly a truly modern goddess :)
A modern goddess I suppose (and that she truly is) but I was kind of wondering why you hadn’t photoshopped out those turbines! :-)
Beautiful photos, Mr Pile. On top of great photos you really captured or created some gorgeous colors in these.
You’ve made Portugal a very magical place for me.
I think my fixation on doors is now evolving to tile. I nice rock should also be admired. :)
Thanks you Mr Pope, and rocks and tiles are good as well, as long as there is a model nearby ;)
Great shots, Tim.
Thank you John, and great to meet you last week :)
