Right, first I know the model in question is a woman not a girl, but then I wouldn’t have the snappy title for my blog post, so please excuse the artistic license :)
I am being more selective in which salons I enter, looking for good catalogues, or more sections in which I can enter my images. So I have been extremely pleased recently to get my results from the Southampton International, BOR and the Austrian Super Circuit, the latter of which is reputedly the largest photographic competition in the world, gaining gold medals in all three exhibitions.
Now there are some similarities about the 3 images that won these medals, first they are all monochrome, which is a bit different for me as I always thought my strength lay in colour images, and also they are all images of Ivory Flame a model I have worked with quite regularly. Now Holly is quite well known for the colour of her hair, but as these images are monochrome it’s all about her posing, as well as the composition and lighting of course.
Gothic Lady – Trierenberg Gold – Austrian SuperCircuit
Fairy Nymph – FIAP Gold – BOR
Circle of Beauty – FIAP Gold – Southampton International
My method of working for all of these images follows my standard procedure, I will take shots of the compositions I prefer, I will then show these to the model, so that they can then do a pose appropriate to the composition and lighting, and then we get the shots, so it’s all teamwork and two brains are always better than one.
I have also had considerable success with images of other models over the last year, including Fredau, Katy and Kayleigh Lush, and I did enter shots from around 10 different models in these three exhibitions, but it’s the Holly images that the judges preferred on these occasions.
So as usual, use good models and you’ll get great shots, and maybe I should do more monochrome. And thanks again Holly, until the next time :)
