Alice In Locationland

Virtually all of the images I produce are of young, attractive models, who are nude in interesting locations. While I like to think that I am now quite a good photographer, I have always acknowledged that the young model, her nudity and the location also play a significant part in the success of my images.
I have always wondered if I changed some elements of that equation whether I could still produce good images, and late last year I had the opportunity to test this when I was approached by Alice Kemble a model older than the models I normally work with who asked whether I was interested in a clothed shoot. I was very flattered by the approach, the model while older was attractive with a very good figure, and had some superb images on her portfolio. It also transpired she knew some super locations, so we arranged a shoot for November.
I really enjoyed working with Alice. She is one of the most creative models I have worked with, and we were each able to come up with ideas and then develop them together. As Alice was clothed it was also quite novel to be able to work in the public gaze.
We started on a track to a farm, and I liked the farm buildings in the background, as well as the various elements on the horizon as this was a relatively flat part of the country. Alice wore a dress that showed her figure off quite well, and that also provided an appropriate contrast to the surroundings.

Next she had arranged access to a scrapyard which had a wealth of interesting nooks and crannies, and we we’re able to to produce this interesting shot of her through the generator room window. The very long thin crop is Alice’s idea.

Also in the scrapyard was this car, and it was a bit tricky to get a nice clean shot without too many distractions. An extreme wide-angle was used, but through appropriate composition she did not become too distorted.

And finally a shot from a burnt-out building. As you can see in Alice’s portfolio there are quite a few shots of her with her face hidden from view, so this was our attempt at one in that style. I’ve used a treatment to really emphasise the burnt-out feeling.

Well not quite finally…. You will notice that Alice’s face is not showing in any of these images, and that was our artistic goal. That is a style adopted in quite a few of the images in her portfolio and so these were designed with the same intention, but to finish off the post I thought it worth including an image not in that style.

I really enjoyed my shoot with Alice. We had some very interesting conversations during the day, discussing aspects of model photography amongst other things. Afterwards she was very involved in both the image selection and final image creation. There was much too-ing and fro-ing of images as I worked on them, as I received valuable comments from her. There are still other great images to come out of the shoot, and I look through the images periodically looking for inspiration, which is the rather haphazard way I work with most of my images – not very structured given my technical background and job, but good enough until I find another way of working!

I think I have proved to myself that the models don’t need to be nude or very young for me to produce great images with them, and I am very grateful to Alice for helping me find out that about myself, as well as for the great time we had creating these images.
