I first really ventured into location nudes in 2010 with a super trip to Scotland which was the subject of my very first blog post, and I was hooked as you can see from the development of my photography since. While in Scotland I worked with, learnt a lot from, and was inspired by the talented Dave Hunt, who had recently achieved an ARPS with a panel of nudes in the landscape. We had a really fun and productive trip to the Isle of Arran with a great model called Karen Scott. I’ve kept in touch with Dave over the years and Karen gave up modelling.
Recently we hooked up together again on social media and Karen suggested bringing ‘the team’ together for another shoot, just like in the old westerns. So in May of this year I will be travelling back up to Scotland, back to where it all began. I’m really looking forward to seeing what we can produce this time – no pressure!
I have a lot to thank Dave for, and this is one of the first images of his that I saw that inspired me, the model is Katy T. I can see that the image also takes pride of place on her website, and I also have a print of it in our bedroom at home.
Dave is fortunate to live near some amazing landscape locations, and he still seems to be able to sniff out really beautiful trees as you can see from this more recent image.
Dave still continues to work with models, but while I am happy shooting digital due to the limited time I am able to give to photography, he likes film and various other alternative processes. Here’s a couple of more recent images I really like, including one of Karen.
Here’s a few of my favourite images of Karen from 2010, and processed at the time. The first two are favourite images of mine and A2 versions of them have hung on our dining room wall for some time.
This was an attempt at a creative image, with a texture overlay.
I’ve just reprocessed the image, and I think I prefer a more natural look.
And looking through the images I do quite like the landscape version and may do a bit more work on it.
And finally I also found this image, and think it works better in mono.
It’s going to be great to learn from and work with Dave and shoot with Karen again, over the intervening years I have realised how much photography is all about the people, and you learn a lot about yourself as well as producing beautiful images. Watch this space to see what we produce – The Magnificent Three ride again :)

Mr Pile, good luck on your reunion shoot. I look forward to seeing some results. I must note how much I like Mr Hunt’s landscape photo.
Love the smoky clouds!
