Well after doing extremely well in the Portrait 2013 exhibition as mentioned in my last blog post, one area I did OK in but could do much better is the portrait section. Now I usually start all shoots with good intentions to do some portraits as well as nudes so that I have a variety of images, but we all know what happens to good intentions :)
Fortunately when I went to Portugal last year to visit my good friend and fellow photographer Francisca the combination of her influence and also having with us one of the most perfect models for portraits Ivory Flame, meant that I finally got some of these type of images. Actually, on this occasion, we were also influenced by the fact that we were shooting at the side of a road with cars going past, and the occasional appearance of an old chap who kept driving through the semi-abandoned village we were shooting in on his bicycle, so semi-nudes were really as far as we could go!
So here’s my attempt at some portraits (my interpretation of portraits is pretty loose!), but to be fair with this model and location getting good shots was not too difficult.
Now many people think that these types of shoots are quite serious affairs, but they really are the opposite and quite a lot of fun, with the combination of creative and intelligent models and keeping one step ahead of the public. Models do smile as well as you can see from this outtake, but that’s usually because of one of my bad jokes!
So a big thank you to Francisca and Ivory Flame, and this year’s Portugal trip is already booked and I’m really looking forward to it.

Great photos Mr Pile. You guys picked a great colorful building. Miss Flame has wings in the first photo, but then we already knew that….
I think my favorite is number 5 because it triggers the idea (in me) that it’s part of a “story”.
(I love using words which we spell differently.)
Some good locations for these image Tim, good work from all
Thank you for the comments gentlemen.
They do indeed look like wings UP, and no 5 does maybe tell the story of the gypsy woman awaiting her man?
It was indeed a great location Richard, outshone again by the model though I would say :)
